She's Alive!

Hello lovelies! As you could tell, for the last month and a half I've completely dropped off the face of the earth. Several changes have taken place in my life recently, the biggest of which is that I ended the relationship with my long-term boyfriend. Lately, I've just been trying to meet new friends and spend time doing things I love that I never had time for previously. Anyways, I'm alive and well, and I'm back from my blogging hiatus now! For this first new post, I'm going to share two quotations that I love with you, one of which I find very thought-provoking and the other, inspiring.

"Most of us spend many hours each week watching celebrated athletes playing in enormous stadiums. Instead of making music, we listen to platinum records cut by millionaire musicians. Instead of making art, we go to admire paintings that brought in the highest bids at the latest auction. We do not run risks acting on our beliefs, but occupy hours each day watching actors who pretend to have adventures, engaged in mock-meaningful action.
This vicarious participation is able to mask, at least temporarily, the underlying emptiness of wasted time. But it is a very pale substitute for attention invested in real challenges. The flow experience that results from the use of skills leads to growth; passive entertainment leads nowhere. Collectively we are wasting each year the equivalent of millions of years of human consciousness. The energy that could be used to focus on complex goals, to provide enjoyable growth, is squandered on patterns of stimulation that only mimic reality."
-- Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi

"So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more dangerous to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man's living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences, and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun."
-- Chris McCandless

Hope you all have been doing wonderfully! Let me know your thoughts on these two quotes,
and tell me what you've been up to!

  1. I love those quotes, especially the second one! It really hit home for me. I'm sorry to hear about your relationship, but I'm glad you realize the broad horizons before you! I, too, am in the process of re-evaluating my relationship of two years with my boyfriend. We've hit a wall and haven't taken the time to climb over it. Sigh. I just got accepted to my dream school, and I'm transferring in the fall, so maybe that's a sign that I deserve a fresh start! :)

  2. I loved to read McCandless book. He was such a free spirit...somehow i guess he wanted to be himself more then being a part of the society, cause today society has lots of rules. I think many of us don't want to be part of it cause it's like loosing a part of ourselves or who we really want to be. :) but some go ahead and try and some will live unhappy for the rest of their lifes.

    :) i wanna be free!

  3. Caylee, so good to see you back!!! I've been checking on your blog all the time, just to see if you appeared on it and I missed it!! Yay! Welcome back, sweety!!

I am sorry to here about your break up with your boyfriend, but hopefully by now you've recovered some, since you mention time spent with friends and indulging in the things you like - this is most definately helpful.

I like the second quote more, than the first one. The first quote is so controversial to me, I dosagree with almost everything even though I can understand what the arthur wanted to say and where he was coming from. But it's not the way I see it. If there were no one to admire art in all of its form the art itself will lose all meaning, because I firmly believe that one of the art's purposes it to inspire others and makign others think, giving them new perspective, and not just serving as an ouutlet for a one's passions. Not all people are naturally artful too, I believe some take great pleasure in watching and admiring. Well, it's only my opinion of course :)

  4. I've recently relocated to Malaysia, so it's nice to see I'm not the only one who has fallen off the face of the earth.
I'm glad that you're using this transition time in your life to grow and become better and examine your life - times like this are always blessings in disguise.
The quotes are incredible, especially the first one.
Can't wait to see you back!
